Two of the most popular ways to take CBD are tincture dropper bottles and gel capsules. In this article, we’ll explain the difference between the two, so you can decide which one is best for you.
What Are CBD Tinctures?
CBD tinctures, also known as oil drops, come in a small vial with a dropper.
These vials contains CBD along with a carrier oil (MCT and hemp are best for bioavailability).
CBD tincture bottles allow you to customize the dose and potency to your liking, whereas capsules come in a single predetermined dose.
Tinctures normally come in 10 mL or 30 mL bottles, which are small and discreet enough to carry around in a pocket, purse, or bag if need be.
They can also come in a variety of flavors, which can help mask the flavor of the hemp plant, which some people find to be not-too-pleasant.
CBD tinctures have a very fast onset time … anywhere from 1-30 minutes. The oil drops can be swallowed immediately, or applied directly under the tongue for 30-60 seconds before being swallowed.
The longer you leave the tincture oil drops under your tongue, the faster it’ll get absorbed by your body.
If you swallow the oil immediately, expect an onset time closer to that of gel capsules.
Pros and Cons of CBD Tinctures
|Customize dose and potency.||Taste can be off putting for some.|
|Variety of flavors available.||Many have unhealthy carrier oils and flavors that may promote inflammation.|
|Fastest onset time if applied under the tongue for 30-60 seconds.||Not as subtle when used in public settings.|
What Are CBD Gel Capsules?
CBD gel capsules are the “pill form” of CBD.
Note there is a difference between CBD capsules and CBD gel capsules. Regular CBD capsules are often larger and more difficult to swallow; gel capsules contain a soft gel coating, which makes for easier swallowing, and also have a bit of carrier oil like MCT to help improve absorption once the CBD enters your body.
Onset time with CBD gel capsules ranges from 30-60 minutes. So if you’re in need of immediate relief, capsules may not be your best bet.
Both gel capsules and oil drops often have unhealthy, inflammatory vegetable oils as a carrier, so make sure you’re choosing one with either MCT or hemp oil (the nutrition facts panel should list the ingredients).
Gel capsules are a discreet way of taking CBD. Some people don’t want to draw attention to themselves when using CBD and tinctures definitely draw more inquisitive stars and lead to more attention when using in front of others than swallowing a quick pill.
Finally, most gel capsules are made from gelatin, which comes from cows. This makes them unsuitable for vegetarians and vegans.
Pros and Cons of CBD Gel Capsules
|Fast and simple way to take CBD without any aftertaste.||Take up to 60 minutes to work.|
|Great for traveling.||Many have unhealthy carrier oils and flavors that may promote inflammation.|
|More subtle than oil drops when taking in public.||Most are not suitable for vegetarian / vegan diets.|
